Short answer: To start a clothing brand on a small budget, launch with a focused collection of three to five styles, produce in low quantities (a low MOQ) so you are not stuck with unsold stock, and prepare a complete tech pack so you pay for fewer sample revisions. With minimums starting at 150 to 200 pieces per style, you can test the market without tying up your cash.
Most new fashion brands do not fail because of weak design. They run out of cash. Money gets locked into inventory that does not sell, or spent on samples and revisions that could have been avoided.
The good news is that a small budget is workable when you plan around three things: a focused first collection, a low minimum order quantity (MOQ), and a complete tech pack.
1. Start With a Focused Collection
A smaller first collection spreads your money less thinly and teaches you more.
Choose a few core styles. Three to five well-made pieces beat fifteen average ones.
Limit colors. Every extra color per style adds to your minimum order and your inventory risk.
Pick products you can explain. Know who the garment is for and why it is better than what already exists.
Start with what defines your brand, such as a signature hoodie, a standout pair of jeans, or a core activewear set, then expand once you see what sells.
2. What Is a Low MOQ, and Why Does It Matter?
The minimum order quantity is the smallest number of pieces a manufacturer will produce per style. Large factories often require 1,000 units or more per style, which ties up cash and leaves unsold stock.
A lower MOQ helps you:
Reduce inventory risk. Order what you can realistically sell.
Preserve cash. Money not tied up in stock can go to marketing, content, and reorders.
Test the market. See which styles and sizes customers want before committing to more.
Reorder smarter. Use real sales data to decide what to make next.
Here are our minimums by category:
| Product category | MOQ |
|---|---|
| Jeans | 200 pcs per color and style |
| T-shirts, sweatpants, hoodies, crewnecks | 200 pcs per color and style |
| Activewear (cut and sew, flatlock) | 200 pcs per style |
| Activewear (seamless) | 3,000 pcs per style across 3 colors. For a first order, from 200 pcs per style across 3–4 colors |
| Womenswear | From 150 pcs per style, depending on the garment type |
We do not add surcharges for small orders.
Sample fees are refunded when you place a bulk order: 100% for jeans, streetwear, seamless activewear, and womenswear. For cut and sew and flatlock activewear, we refund 50% on orders from 200 pcs and 100% on orders from 500 pcs. Fabric swatch fees are billed separately and are not refundable.
3. Does a Low MOQ Mean Lower Quality?
A common worry is that small orders get lower priority or lower standards. Quality comes from clear specifications and consistent checks, not from order size.
Our production team works from your tech pack and fabric requirements, and applies the same process to every order:
Fabric inspection before cutting begins
Inline inspection while garments are being sewn
Final inspection of every finished piece against your tech pack before packing
The clearer your requirements, the more consistent the result, and the more competitive your price, because there are fewer surprises and fewer rounds of rework.
4. What Should a Tech Pack Include?
A tech pack is the single most effective way to save money when you are starting out. It tells your manufacturer exactly what to make, so samples come out closer to what you imagined and you pay for fewer revisions.
A complete tech pack includes:
Style information and technical requirements
Bill of materials (fabrics, trims, labels)
Measurement chart with tolerances for every size
Flat sketches with measurements marked on them
Colorways, labeling, and packaging instructions
Quality requirements
Accurate quotes depend on it. A complete tech pack can also shorten development, and in some cases lets you skip a sampling round.

5. What Costs Should You Budget For?
Production cost is only part of what it takes to launch. Plan for:
Samples and any revisions
Shipping, duties, and taxes
Packaging and labels
Photography and marketing
A reserve for reordering your best sellers
Share a target price range per piece with us early. We use it to check feasibility, not to set your price. Our quotes are always based on actual fabric, labor, and trim costs, and we will break them down for you on request. If your target is below what a design needs, we will tell you honestly and suggest changes to fabric, trims, or details that bring you closer.

6. Why Sample Before Bulk Production?
Never go straight to bulk. Approve a sample first, check the fit, fabric feel, and finish, then place your production order. It is far cheaper to fix a problem on one garment than on hundreds.
Labeling, Pricing, and Compliance Basics
Labels. Garments sold in the US generally need fiber content, country of origin, and care instructions on their labels under FTC rules. In the EU, textile products must be labeled with their fiber composition under the EU Textile Products Regulation. Requirements differ by product and market, so confirm the current rules for where you sell and include label details in your tech pack.
Pricing. Work backward from your cost. Add production cost, shipping, duties, packaging, and marketing to find your landed cost, then set a retail price that leaves a healthy margin for your positioning and sales channel.
Selling in the EU. Check current product safety rules, which may require a responsible contact based in the EU.
Can One Manufacturer Handle Private Label and Branded Packaging?
Launching a brand takes more than sewing garments, and managing many separate suppliers drains both time and budget. We support full-package production, so your product arrives finished and ready to sell:
Private label: your brand name and logo on your garments' labels, so every piece carries your identity.
Branded packaging: custom zip bags printed with your own branding, so your product is presented professionally from the first unboxing.
Production and quality control: from fabric inspection to final inspection, handled by our production team.
Export documentation: the paperwork needed to ship your order.
To make this smooth, include your label and packaging details in your tech pack: artwork files, sizes, placement, and packaging instructions. We confirm the options and costs for labels and packaging in your quote.
7. How Do You Plan Your Production Timeline?
Start from your launch date and work backward through sampling, production, quality control, and shipping. Build in extra time, especially around holidays and seasonal peaks. We confirm exact schedules once your sample is approved, because they depend on your product and quantity.
8. Reorder Based on Real Sales
Your first order is a test. Track what sells by style, color, and size, then use that data to decide what to reorder and what to drop. That is how a small budget turns into a growing brand.
Your Starter Checklist

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to start a clothing brand?
It depends on your products, quantities, and fabrics. Plan for samples, production, shipping, duties, packaging, and marketing, and keep a reserve for reorders. Share your target price range and quantity with us and we will tell you what is realistic.
What is a good MOQ for a startup clothing brand?
A lower MOQ limits your risk. Our minimums are 150 to 200 pieces per style (or per color and style) for most categories, and seamless activewear can start from 200 pieces per style on a first order.
How many styles should my first collection have?
Three to five core styles in a limited number of colors is a common, manageable start.
Do I need a tech pack before contacting a manufacturer?
It is strongly recommended, because it speeds up quoting and reduces sample rounds. If you only have sketches, our Design Partner Program can help you create one.
